Instructional League Information

Mission Statement:

The Instructional League season is a 12-week program, with approximately 10 scheduled games. This league is designed to give a positive and encouraging experience to all participants. Although games get competitive, there is ZERO tolerance for any negative, disruptive or non-sportsmanlike conduct during practices and/or games.

Background:

As a continued effort to develop young athletes at the grassroots of the sport of basketball, EPWBA has put together the Instructional League to allow beginning players to start at the age of 7 (second grade).

Teams and coaches will work together during practices to teach basic basketball skills, game rules, and teamwork. The same two teams will compete in a fun and exciting 3x3 game each week (see rules below).

Details:

  • Registration: Starts October 1st
  • Cost: $195 ($225 for late registrants)

Rules:

Court and ball

  • The game will be played on a half court (Full-Court on one side of the gym) at one of the elementary school gym floors
  •  The game ball will be size 27.5

The Teams

  •  Each team will be assigned 9 players
  •  Coaches will match up evenly skilled players to compete

The Officials

  • EPWBA Student Referees will officiate the Instructional League games.  There will be one referee per game

Time and Scoring

  • Games will be two 18-minute halves (running clock). The clock will stop for player substitutions and free throws.  The score at half time will be cleared and restarted at zero. Each team will get two 30 second time outs for the game Player substitutions will be in groups of three (no player will be allowed to play consecutive segments - only applies when team has 6 or more players)
  •  If the teams do not have an equal number of players, coaches have the option to modify the game and play a segment 2-on-2 or 4-on-4.  This is only possible if both teams do not have the full complement of players. For example, Team A only has 8 players present and Team B has all nine players; Team A will have to play 3-on-3, but select a player (of equal talent level or less than the three players on the other team) to play with the two remaining players.
  • If both teams only have 8 players, the coaches will have the option of playing 4-on-4 to make the segments even or elect to play 3-on-3 with modifications above.
  • In a rare situation if both teams only have 5 players to show up, the regular 3-on-3 game can be played or the coaches may elect to alternate sessions 2-on-2 and 3-on-3
  • Regardless of the number on the court, 3-on-3 rules will apply
  • First possession of the game will go to the AWAY team; First possession of the 2nd half will go to the HOME team
  •  Defense must be man-to-man.  There will NOT be a 3-second violation rule in effect, HOWEVER, coaches should instruct offensive players not to camp out in the lane.
  • The ball must change possession after every made basket (EXCEPTION: for some extremely odd reason if there is a technical foul called, the team shooting the technical foul shot will be awarded the ball on the next possession immediately following the technical shot)
  • Two free throws will be awarded for fouls in the act of shooting on a missed basket and on the 10th foul and beyond
  • Possession will change after all free throws (except technical foul shots)
  • The clock will only stop for player substitutions, free throws, injuries and time outs.
  • The Home team will be responsible for providing a Scorekeeper (although the score will not be officially recorded, there will be a flip chart to show the score and the scorekeeper will track player fouls, as well.
  • The Away team will be responsible for providing a Timekeeper. A stopwatch will be used to keep time and timekeepers must actively communicate with the game referee to track time for player substitutions.
  • All jump balls are awarded to the Defense
